Over 100 participants met in the first Megacity Workshop to identify and discuss the key issues facing the urban and business development of the capital city and its environs. Participants included all major stakeholder groups from the central and local government to private sector associations, from academia to commercial developers, from banks to construction companies and building materials producers.
The workshop was held to discuss the findings from a pilot study on the future scale of issues and needs in greater Jakarta. Participants were invited to exchange views on the pilot study findings, to stimulate ideas for integrated and sustainable solutions and to network with each other in search of practical opportunities. Stakeholders spoke freely about the challenges Jabodetabek currently faces, the obstacles, and the likely future of the region if actions are not taken. In a positive call-to-arms, most expressions of concern were focused on environmental and transport issues. Waste collection, slum eradication, and the need for adequate public transport topped the list of issues. The workshop was a resounding success in bringing together a diverse and well-qualified body of expertise and a number of projects have emerged.
