This second workshop was designed to build on the foundations and ideas generated by the 2008 Megacity Workshop, which covered the future scale of issues and needs in greater Jakarta.
Participants were invited to exchange views on the findings from the 2008 pilot study, to stimulate ideas for integrated and sustainable solutions and to network with each other in search of practical opportunities.
Four breakout sessions were held to examine specific areas in more detail:
- Affordable Housing
This session identified ways to increase residential density in a sustainable way; address integration between housing development and aspects of urban sustainability, such as public transport and facilities; and improve low-quality housing through sustainability considerations.
- Energy Efficiency in Building
This session identified ways to reduce GHG emissions by 5-10% and 10,000 tonnes of CO2 in residential and commercial sectors across DKI and Greater Jakarta.
- Mobility
This session identified ways to expand Jakarta’s public transportation network and provide multimodal interconnectivity; to integrate public transport with new building; to improve public transport infrastructure and the quality of public transportation facilities.
- Waste and Water Management
This session mapped waste management solutions for urban and suburban Jakarta, including processing for different waste types (industrial, domestic, water waste, solid waste) as well as identifying solutions for filling gaps in utilities management.
