Holcim Awards Workshop, Bali.
Developing New Perspectives Towards the Future
Bali, 19th January 2011 – 3rd cycle International Holcim Awards competition has been opened to win a total prize of U.S. $ 2 million. This competition is open to the project in sustainable construction, infrastructure projects, urban design and landscaping, and the development of material technology and construction products. This award is an initiative from Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction, based in Switzerland, and PT Holcim Indonesia Tbk (Holcim Indonesia) support the implementation of this Award, especially because Holcim Indonesia sees that the Sustainable Construction, is becoming more important for Indonesia’s growth.

This workshop is the first time held in Bali, the island where many innovative local and international construction practices emerged. The background of sustainable construction movement was shared by Ranidia Leeman, the Commercial Building Solution Manager of Holcim Indonesia. She highlighted that the development of the building sector has a significant impact on the environment; 50% of the world's natural resources are absorbed in the construction process, 25% of timber forest in the world is vanish to be used as building and interior. In the operational process, building sector absorbs 17% of clean water supply, and during building construction, till its operate for decades, it produce 40% of CO2 emissions. Globally, it is very important to find innovations in the building sector to reduce its negative impact on the environment.


The speakers in the workshop were: Prof. Gunawan Tjahjono, one of the Holcim Awards jury for Asia Pacific Region; Prima Wijaya, Holcim Awards Indonesia winner for the category of Next Generation; and Myrza Yuliansyah, Encouragement Prize Award Winner, Holcim Awards 2nd cycle for Asia Pacific Region. The key presentation was on the topic of "Re-inventing Construction” brought by Popo Danes, a Balinese architect who is also well-known internationally. He gave a presentation on his new office which is an additional building from the existing one which functioned as an art gallery and cafe. This building has a social function as a cultural meeting place, but its design also respects local-aspects, reduce the operational cost of the buildings and impact to the environment.
