Holcim Awards Workshop, Jakarta.

 

Jakarta, 23 February 2011 – The 3rd International Holcim Awards competition offering a total of USD 2 million in prize money is open to: sustainable building and civil engineering works; landscape, urban design and infrastructure projects; and materials, products and construction technologies. The Awards are an initiative of the Swiss-based Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction and supported by PT Holcim Indonesia Tbk (Holcim Indonesia) to help foster more innovation of sustainable construction in respective countries.  

 

A Sustainable Construction workshop was organized today at the Mulia Hotel, Jakarta, with the aim to promote sustainable Construction and Holcim Awards to the professionals in architecture, engineering, planning, and other related fields. The speakers included Prof. Gunawan Tjahjono, a jury of the Holcim Award for the Asia-Pacific region; Prima Wijaya, Next Generation Category Winner, Holcim Awards Indonesia; and Didi Pramujadi, the Encouragement Prize Winner, Holcim Awards 2nd Cycle for Asia Pacific. Adding up more on the discussion of sustainability issue, the workshop also bring a keynote Presentation on “Towards Greener Architecture” which was delivered by Budiman Hendropurnomo. He is  a notable Indonesian architect leading an architecture practice called DCM, whose works have been recognized internationally. All of the speakers are very optimist that there has been great shift of focus and mindset towards green building, in particular for Jakarta Government who are issuing new government decree soon, and on top of that the developer will see values in constructing more sustainable building when the public starts to demand for it.

 

Positive atmosphere were also engulfing the audience towards the event. Its proven by  several questions posted on the new regulation that can stimulate growth in green building and sustainable construction practices.

 

Nevertheless, Indonesia has contributed being the second biggest entries globally for the previous Holcim Awards Second Cycle – showing that Indonesia has a great passion towards sustainable construction and carries large potential for innovative sustainable construction projects.

 

The Holcim Awards (main) category of the competition is open to architects, planners, engineers, project owners, builders and construction firms that showcase sustainable responses to technological, environmental, socioeconomic and cultural issues affective contemporary building and construction. Projects are eligible for the competition if they have reached an advanced stage of design and construction (or commercial production in the case of materials, products and construction technologies) had not started before July 1, 2010. The competition will be closed on March 23rd 2011.
