As part of socializing “Sustainable Construction” and promoting Holcim Awards Third Cycle in Indonesia, Holcim Awards Workshop was held first in Yogyakarta, September 2010.
Around 70 practitioners in construction industry such as architect, planners, engineers and academics from Yogyakarta and even from Solo and Semarang, gathered in Sheraton Hotel to discuss the different perspectives about Sustainable Construction, Indonesia’s construction and development issues and how to move forward.
The event started with an opening speech from Holcim Indonesia Marketing & Innovation Director, Mr. Patrick Walser, followed with introduction of Holcim Foundation by Ms. Ranidia Leeman, Holcim’s Integrated Solution Manager, where the three key activities of Holcim Foundations was explained, including the Holcim Awards, that is open from July 1st 2010 – March 23rd 2011. This Awards welcomes various ideas on building, urban development and material system projects that contributes to the advancement of sustainable construction.
Unique perspectives were shared from one of the Jury Member of Holcim Awards Regional Asia Pacific, Prof. Gunawan Tjahjono, on how different projects were debated for their achievement on Holcim’s five target issues; Progress, People, Planet, Prosperity and Proficiency. He also expresses excitement about Indonesia as the 2nd largest entries on the previous cycle, but also hoped that the next submissions will be of better quality.

Previous winners of Holcim Awards Encouragement Prize and Holcim Awards Indonesia, Myrza Yuliansyah & Lim Yu Sing, also shared their winning project to fellow colleagues in Yogyakarta. Both gave their tips on how to enter this competition. “Don’t be discourage by the scale of this competition but to utilize it as a learning moment for self development” said Lim Yu Sing.
This workshop was also enriched by 2 local keynote speakers, well known for their contribution in Yogyakarta. Mrs. Laretna Adhisakti (UGM Lecturer) shared her previous work and experience in preserving the architectural heritage site and the importance of this contribution to cultural sustainability, while Mr. Winarna (UKDW Lecturer) shared his views on building sustainable development strategy for low income settlements.
Most of the participants were delighted with the workshop because they were not only given a series of presentation, but also were facilitated to actually review a project using the Sustainable Construction Assessment Tools (SCAT). “I am very pleased with what I received today, I have never experience an event like this before…” said Dewi, architect consultant.

Stimulated with the extensive perspectives shared by the speakers, the participants was also eager to submit fresh ideas from Yogyakarta. Stevina, representing the “Social” team announced the ideas of:
- Renovation of abandoned art village to be Jogja representative art gallery
- Renovation of abandoned culinary retail complex near station to be meeting point / public area
- Pilot project of community's household waste treatment to accelerate public awareness and support government initiative on household waste treatment program.
While Mario, also sparks new ideas from “Environment” team for unique project proposals;
- Floating house as housing solution in area with flood risk
- Waste re-usage for building material
- Coconut shell application for house wall material.
To name a few…
Holcim Awards Workshop will also be held in other cities of Indonesia, Jakarta (November 16th), Bandung (November 23rd), Surabaya (December 10th) and Bali (January 19th, 2011).
