Green building can be plain and simple

The idea of a green building plan is to conserve energy and water, spatial planning expert Nirwono Yoga told the Jakarta Globe. And that does not mean buying certain brands or investing in expensive refits. The most important thing people can do, said Nirwono, is change their lifestyles.

The Jakarta city administration is aiding those changes by pushing for financial incentives for new and old buildings that go green. PT Holcim Indonesia is also backing the idea of sustainable building, with plans to test a new system of radiation cooling that will cool rooms through the use of cooling pipes embedded in concrete.

Naning Adiwoso, chairwoman of Indonesia’s Green Building Council, says the challenge is changing the mindset that building green will be costly. “We don’t need complicated technology, because it usually just goes back to how to install windows and doors to get enough light or air, so you don’t need to turn on the lights during the day,” she told the Jakarta Globe.
