New bus terminal faces budget cut delay
Despite a major budget cut, the early stages of development will begin on the Pulogebang Bus Terminal, set to be Indonesia’s biggest and most modern bus depot with the ability to accommodate nearly 3,000 buses.
According to the Jakarta Globe, the terminal is part of the city’s new Transit Oriented Development Scheme, which is aimed at alleviating over-development in Jakarta’s outer municipalities. But its design has been criticized for not being green enough, and during recent budget revisions the city administration agreed to cut the project’s budget until new design elements can be incorporated that will cut down on electricity and energy consumption.
Initially planned for completion in 2011, the project will be pushed back another year, with only 13 percent of the initial budget for 2010 ready to be meted out. The rest of the money will be allocated in 2011 and 2012, as reported in the Jakarta Globe.
Muhammad Sanusi, a member of the City Council’s Commission D that oversees development, responded to the budget delay by saying it shows that the city administration is not planning development well.
